Running the Numbers for Local Minnesota LAH/BNPs
- In 2007-2008 forty Minnesota Living at Home/Block Nurse Programs provided volunteer and service coordination, health promotion, community building and outreach services to nearly 12,000 local elders at a cost of $46.00 per month.
- During the 2007-08 Fiscal Year LAH/BNP volunteers in these Minnesota LAH/BNPs provided 106,243 hours of service to elders in their communities, representing 52 full-time Equivalents in Staff costs, if paid to provide the service.
- Over ten thousand elders received non-nursing services from local LAH/BNPs at an average cost of $17.00 per person/per month.
- 1,824 elders required some nursing services during the year at an average cost per person served of $206.51 per month.
- The Grand Total of elders served was 11,931. Total expenditures of these 40 Programs were $7,138,211--yielding a Total Average Cost Per Elder Served of $559.28 compared to an average annual cost per year of $60,198 in a nursing home.
- To further understand and appreciate the amazing success of the LAH/BNP model, please note the following contrasts between costs for care in the Programs and comparable costs in a nursing home…

The LAH/BNP mission to help elders remain in their homes has positive societal and financial effects for the elders, their families and their communities. Equally important are the obvious savings for taxpayers, who through local and state governments pay most of the costs of nursing home care.
Approximately one in five (15%) of the elders we serve needs home nursing. The funding for this care comes from a variety of sources including the elders themselves (14%) and the payee of last resort, the local LAH/BNP itself (3%).

Other Information
- Every $1.00 invested in a LAH/BNP saves the people of Minnesota $3.00.
- Every $1.00 invested by the State of Minnesota in a LAH/BNP generates $1.44 in other contributions.
Conclusion
LAH/BNPs are a reasonable and cost effective partial solution for the growing Age Wave of elders in Minnesota and the Heartland.
