Legislative Update
The 2008 LAH/BNP Day at the Capitol event is scheduled for Thursday, April 3rd.  The LAH/BNP community needs to show a strong attendance at the capitol to support our 2008 initiative.  The effort this year is to obtain a transfer of dollars from the Community Services/Services Development grant pool of dollars to a one-time grant of $20,000 to each of the nine currently operating LAH/BNPs in Minnesota without a base grant.

Consumer Directed Services Available

Elderberry Institute recognizes the importance of elders making their own decisions about their needs thus enabling them to live independently in their homes and communities. Consumer Directed Services (CDS) is a program that empowers elders to make decisions about the services they need and want. CDS funds may be used for a broad array of services and supports such as personal care, home modifications and chore services, allowing elders to live an inclusive community life and avoid institutionalization. Elders can hire and train their own family members, neighbors and/or friends, as well as seek and purchase the goods that will support their goals.

As a certified Fiscal Support Entity, Elderberry Institute offers regular training opportunities for individuals and programs interested in learning more about the CDS process. Such training can include information as how to identify elders who could benefit from CDS and how to provide ongoing monthly support while the elder or caregiver is enrolled in the program.

For CDS information please contact the program coordinator Eleni Messiou by phone at 651-649-0315 or 1-800-320-1707 (toll-free) or by email at emessiou@elderberry.org.

If you are currently providing Consumer Directed Services or want to download our informational flyer, visit Elderberry's Consumer Directed webpage at www.elderberry.org/cds.asp

Also, the MN Department of Human Services has some great CDS information.  To view their CDS webpage, click here.

2006-07 Cost & Services Analysis
The 2006-07 Cost and Services Analysis is final and available for public viewing.  These reports show, among other things, how many dollars were saved by elders due to Living at Home/Block Nurse Programs in the 06-07 Fiscal Year.  In FY 2006-07, 41 LAH/BNPs in MN and ND helped keep 1,139 people out of nursing homes for a total of 8,241 months.  If these people had been in nursing homes, the care-related cost to the federal and state government, as well as health plans and private individuals would have been about $22,070,891.  The cost of providing service to these people through Living at Home/Block Nurse Programs was about $1,735,232.  This represents an astonishing savings of just over $20 million.

For further information, the reports can be dowloaded in PDF format and there is a separate summary report for each LAH/BNP region.  To download the reports, click on the following links:
